DM: KDD ClassesFrom: Dan Steinberg Date: Sat, 31 Jan 1998 01:37:50 -0500 (EST) Per Douglas Sur's inquiry about data mining courses in the Washington D.C. area, the American Statistical Association offers a course titled "Data Mining with Decision Trees-An Introduction to CARTŪ " This one-day introductory course is coming to the Washington DC area on March 6 and to Philadelphia on March 9. It presupposes minimal statistical background. see www.amstat.org for more information. A short description of the course follows: DATA MINING WITH DECISION TREES-AN INTRODUCTION TO CARTŪ (tm). This one-day course is intended for the practitioner wanting to learn about the decision tree methodology, in particular, why you would want to use it, what its advantages are relative to classical statistical techniques, and how it can be used as an effective data mining tool. The emphasis will be on using the advanced technology embodied in CARTŪ (Classification and Regression Trees) for practical data analysis involving classification. All concepts will be illustrated using real world examples drawn primarily from biomedical and market research applications. The course will also include a discussion of the comparative performance of CARTŪ versus other computer-intensive methods such as artificial neural networks and statistician-generated parametric models. *---------------------------+---------------------------------* | Dan Steinberg | FAX (619) 543 8888 | | Salford Systems | VOICE (619) 543-8880 | | 8880 Rio San Diego Dr | | | San Diego, CA 92120 | www.salford-systems.com | *-------------------------------------------------------------*
