DM: PhD Studentships in Data MiningFrom: Melanie Hilario Date: Wed, 7 Oct 1998 12:07:37 -0400 (EDT)
The Artificial Intelligence (AI) Group of the University of Geneva offers two PhD studentships and one software development post, all to be filled as soon as possible: The 2 PhD studentships focus on machine learning and data mining. The first (Ref. AI1) concerns a European long-term research project entitled "A Meta-Learning Assistant for Providing User Guidance in Machine Learning and Data Mining". The main research themes of the project are: model selection (choice of an appropriate learning model/algorithm for a given application task), data screening and data transformation prior to knowledge extraction, meta-learning approaches to model selection and data transformation. The second post (Ref. AI2) involves model combination rather than model selection; the selected candidate will work for a national project on hybrid neurosymbolic learning, i.e., on combining symbolic and neural network models in machine learning/data mining systems. For the above posts, the successful candidate is expected to prepare a thesis related to the corresponding project's research goals. Ideally, candidates should have: (1) a Master's degree in Computer Science; (2) a strong background in artificial intelligence, machine learning (both symbolic and numeric), and data modelling/analysis/mining; (3) experience in software development using C++; (4) an aptitude to pursue independent personal research while participating actively in project prototype development. In addition, applications are invited for a position as programmer or software developer for a European project on tele-teaching and self-evaluation. This post (Ref. AI3) is to be filled for a duration of one year. Starting gross salary for an MSc graduate is around 57000 CHF/year (Currency converter: http://www.oanda.com/). If you wish to be considered for any of these positions, please send your curriculum vitae, together with the names and addresses of 2 references, to the following contact persons: Prof. Christian R. PELLEGRINI Christian.Pellegrini@cui.unige.ch Dr. Melanie Hilario Melanie.Hilario@cui.unige.ch Electronic applications are encouraged for reasons of speed; please specify the reference of the post for which you are applying. For those with no e-mail facilities, applications can be sent by by fax or regular mail to the above contact persons (address and fax number below): CUI - University of Geneva 24 rue General-Dufour CH-1211 Geneva 4, Switzerland Fax: +41 22/705 7780 Applications will be accepted until positions are filled.
