DM: ICAI-99: call for participationFrom: Peter Brockhausen Date: Mon, 25 Jan 1999 09:40:00 -0500 (EST) Intensive Course on Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, and Knowledge Discovery http://www-ai.informatik.uni-dortmund.de/EVENTS/ICAI99/ March 11, 1999 Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik Computer Science VIII Univ. Dortmund morik@ls8.informatik.uni-dortmund.de http://www-ai.informatik.uni-dortmund.de (Scientific chair) Organizer: Gesellschaft fuer Informatik (GI) "The problem of data overload looms ominously ahead in almost every field of our society. Databases of tera byte are now not uncommon. Our ability to analyze and understand massive datasets lags far behind our ability to gather and store the data with the ever advancing computer technology. A new generation of computational techniques and tools is required to support the extraction and the discovery of useful knowledge from the rapidly growing volumes of data. Raw data is rarely of direct benefit. Its true value is reflected by our ability to extract information useful for decision support or for exploration and understanding of the phenomena exhibited in the data source." This quote from the First International Conference on Discovery Science which took place at Fukuoka, Japan, in 1998, describes well the challenge that brings together scientists from artificial intelligence, database technology, information retrieval, and statistics. In parallel with the Japanese initiative for a discovery science, the Conference on Automated Learning and Discovery at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA, also took place in 1998. Both aim at a distinct field that integrates approaches from computational learning theory, neural networks, Bayesian networks, machine learning, knowledge discovery in databases, linguistic engineering, intelligent agents, statistical learning theory, and information retrieval. Why should we stand behind? The goal of the intensive course - ICAI 1999 - is to show the need and to promote the use of discovery science here. ICAI-99 offers to decision-makers in commerce and in industry, in particular those who are dealing with the management and analysis of large data sets, but also to scientists and students: - overview presentations of new information technologies - presentations of innovative application fields. We are glad to announce international, well-known scientists and practicians as speakers. In a compact, one-day tutorial you can get in touch with the state of the art in this new, exciting discipline! ICAI-99 (http://www-ai.informatik.uni-dortmund.de) will take place in Dortmund, March 11, 1999 one day before the 2nd.
