DM: RE: VisualizationFrom: Smart, Bill Date: Fri, 15 May 1998 11:39:40 -0400 (EDT) Sandra, I'll be interested in the responses you get to your question on definition. My definitions are: Knowledge Discovery in Databases covers all methods used to do data analysis. This includes SQL, reports, lists, printouts, charts, graphs, data viz of all kinds, statistics and machine learning algorithm such as rule induction, neural networks, clustering, etc... Data Mining is a marketing term that implies some secretive, eclectic methods. It usually refers only to statistics and machine learning algorithms, and maybe data viz. Some people do not include statistics. Good luck...Bill! -----Original Message----- From: Sandra Poprawski [SMTP:uorb@rz.uni-karlsruhe.de] Sent: Friday, May 15, 1998 8:27 AM To: datamine-l@nautilus-sys.com Subject: DM: Visualization Dear ladies and gentlemen, I am a student of the University of Karlsruhe and I am interested in getting some information about data mining or KDD in general. These are my questions: (1) What is the difference between data mining an KDD (knowledge discovery of databases)? (2) Are there any companies which take part in this list of discussion and use special tools for visualization of large databases ? What kind of tools are there or what else do you prefer for presentation ? (3) Are there any other systems than VisDB existing (that's the one I'm working on)? (4) Does anyone know good literature about visualization in general? I would be very glad if my questions will be answered soon! Thanks! Sandra Poprawski
