Sandra, Normally, I wouldn't respond to such a query (defining data mining versus knowledge discovery). But I feel the need to add something. In general, I think knowledge discovery and data mining are synonymous in common usage. In *practice*, knowledge discovery has more of an academic bent. The leading knowledge discovery conference is sponsored by IEEE and the American Association for Artifical Intelligence. Since you are coming from a university, this area probably has wealth of information for you. I would strongly refer you to kdd nuggets http://www.kdnuggets.com/ and to the Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Conference http://www.aaai.org/Conferences/KDD/1998 The next conference is at the end of August in New York City. Data mining, in my usage, focuses on connecting business needs to the pattern discovery process. You find data mining people at industry specific conferences -- Retail '98, Technology in the Financial Services, NCDM, and so on. Data mining connects the data and the business. I would refer you to http://www.data-miners.com/" for more on our perspective. --gordon Gordon Linoff co-author Data Mining Techniques for Marketing, Sales, and Customer Support
