DM: Call for ParticipationFrom: Omer F Rana Date: Fri, 19 Feb 1999 06:45:57 -0500 (EST) Hi We are co-organising a conference on 'Problem Solving Environments: Infrastructures and Prototypes' in Spain. This is the first of a series of conferences. We would welcome participants -- and young researchers interested in presenting their work. More details can be found at: http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/euresco99/ Omer ------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PARTICIPATION European Research Conference Series on Advanced Environments and Tools for High Performance Computing Problem-Solving Environments: Infrastructure and Prototypes 12-17 June 1999 San Feliu de Guixols, Spain http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/euresco99 Deadlines --------- To apply to attend the conference: 15 March 1999 To submit a poster presentation: 15 March 1999 To submit a short "young researcher" talk: 15 March 1999 To apply for funding to attend: 15 March 1999 All submissions and applications should be made through the application form accessible through the conference web site http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/euresco99 Conference Scope ---------------- Research into problem-solving environments (PSEs) is an active and expanding field, with the potential for a wide impact on high performance computing. PSEs provide software tools and expert assistance to the user, and serve as an easy-to-use interface to high performance computing resources, thereby allowing the rapid prototyping of ideas, detailed analysis, and higher productivity. The conference gives a broad interpretation to what is meant by a PSE, but in general a PSE provides a complete integrated computing environment for composing, compiling, and running applications in a specific problem area. A PSE may also incorporate many features of an expert system, and provides extensive assistance to users in formulating problems, running the problem on an appropriate computing platform, and viewing and analysing the results. In addition, a PSE may have access to web-based information resources, sophisticated job control systems, and visualisation environments. PSEs may incorporate compute-intensive components, such as the solution of a complex mathematical model, and/or data-intensive components employed, for example, in Geographical Information Systems or database applications. Among the research areas relevant to PSEs are distributed computing, computational science and engineering, software technologies such as Java, CORBA, and XML, mobile agents, immersive visualisation environments, computational steering, knowledge discovery, the remote control of scientific instruments, and concurrent and collaborative engineering. European Research Conferences ----------------------------- The European Research Conferences bring together small groups of mainly European participants at the forefront of research for open, off-the-record discussions of current topics and problems, new ideas, and directions for future research. No conference proceedings are published, and in order to foster an open discussion of new ideas nothing presented at the conference may be referenced without the specific authorisation of the contributor. Conference Programme -------------------- The conference programme will include o Twenty-one invited talks o Two poster sessions o A session of 15 minute talks by young researchers on their ideas and directions for research. This is intended to give PhD students and postdocs a chance to present their ideas in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. o A session to review the conference, and to discuss the orientation of future conferences in the series. o A trip to the Dali museum in Figueras. Other than the short talks by young researchers mentioned above, there will be no contributed talks. You can apply to give one of the short talks or present a poster by supplying an abstract in your application form. Full details of the programme and the application form are available at the conference web site http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/euresco99 Application to Attend --------------------- Conference attendance will be limited to 100 people. To attend you must complete an application form (available at the conference web site). The conference is identified as "Advanced Environments and Tools for High Performance Computing" on the form. Applicants will be informed 6-10 weeks prior to the conference of the outcome of their application. Lodging can be reserved through the application form so there is no need to contact the hotel directly to book a room. The conference fee of about 3500FF covers conference registration, board and lodging. Limited funds are available to assist young researchers to attend the conference. Details are given on the application form. The closing date for applications is 15 March 1999. If you wish to apply to attend the conference you must do so before this date. There will be no on-site registration. Location and Transportation --------------------------- The conference will take place at Hotel Eden Roc in San Feliu de Guixols on the Spanish Costa Brava. Further details of this delightful location, and how to get there, are available on the conference web site http://www.cs.cf.ac.uk/euresco99 Sponsorship ----------- This conference would not be possible without the generous sponsorship of: o The European Science Foundation o NEC Europe Ltd o Cardiff University The support of these organisations is gratefully acknowledged.
