At the AFCEA International Federal Data Mining Symposium
and Exposition '99, on March 9-10 at the McLean Hilton in Tysons
Corner,
Virginia,

Dr. Jen Q. Louie and Thomas Kraay will present:

Origami:  A New Data Visualization Tool

Origami (tm) is a new hybrid data mining tool which can be used to
identify complex, latent relationships present in large quantities of
data.
These relationships can be used to interactively explore useful and
strategic information that would otherwise be intractable.

Because Origami uses novel and extremely efficient algorithms,
personal computers can be used to solve problems involving extremely
large databases. Origami uses a completely different approach. The
two unique features of Origami are a user-defined metric which defines
a “distance” between data elements, and the ability to construct a
plot of the data elements that approximately preserves the computed
distances.  Interactively using Origami plots, one can visually
identify
relationships among data elements, which can lead to obtaining
extremely useful and important information.

This paper will:
(1) Explain the Origami approach,
(2) Illustrate its use in identification of high quality leads in a
criminal
investigation using data from three disparate databases:  telephone
records, telephone owners, and information on suspects whose
telephones were either subject to wire taps or PEN registers, and
(3) Discuss other domains for which this new data mining approach
is likely to be more effective than traditional approaches.
