We published a paper with a KDD systems classification scheme:

Michal Goebel and Le Gruenwald, A survey of Data Mining Software 
Tools,
ACM SIGKDD Explorations, vol. 1, pp. 20--33, June 1999.

However, given the recent explosion in data mining applications, a
review/extension of that scheme might be in order.
